Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the most common vaginal infections in adults, yet it’s often misunderstood or misdiagnosed. At InMotion Health, we make it easy to get fast, private, and effective care from the comfort of home with our discreet virtual and at-home urgent care options.

What Is Bacterial Vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance of the natural bacteria in the vagina. While the vagina normally contains a mix of “good” and “bad” bacteria, BV occurs when harmful bacteria overgrow and disrupt the vaginal environment. It’s not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but it is more common among sexually active individuals and can be triggered by certain behaviors or products that alter the vaginal flora.

How Is Bacterial Vaginosis Treated?

At InMotion Health, treatment for bacterial vaginosis begins with your choice of a virtual or at-home consultation. During your visit, we’ll review your symptoms and medical history. If you opt for in-home care, we’ll collect a swab for testing through our trusted lab partners. Diagnosis is typically confirmed by evaluating the vaginal discharge for pH levels and signs of bacterial overgrowth. When testing involves sensitive areas, we use a self-swabbing technique, which our team will guide you through step by step. This approach ensures your comfort and privacy.

If BV is confirmed, we may prescribe oral antibiotics or vaginal antibiotic creams or gels to restore balance. You’ll also receive guidance on avoiding common irritants like scented soaps or douches, as well as personalized recommendations on sexual health habits to help prevent recurrence. Most cases of BV clear up within a week of starting treatment, but for those who experience frequent infections, we’ll help guide you toward appropriate follow-up with gynecology for long-term care and prevention.

Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms

Some people with BV don’t experience any noticeable symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Thin, gray or white vaginal discharge
  • A strong, fishy odor (especially after intercourse)
  • Vaginal itching or irritation
  • Burning sensation during urination

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to get evaluated to rule out other conditions like yeast infections or STIs, which can have similar signs.

What Causes Bacterial Vaginosis?

BV happens when there’s an imbalance in the vagina—harmful bacteria grow too much and outnumber the healthy bacteria that normally protect against infection. Several factors can increase the risk of developing BV, including:

  • Frequent douching
  • New or multiple sexual partners
  • Using scented soaps or vaginal hygiene products
  • Smoking
  • Not using protection during sex

Keeping the vaginal environment balanced is key to prevention, and our providers can help you understand which lifestyle habits may be contributing to recurring infections.

Why Is Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment Important?

Left untreated, BV can lead to more serious health complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), increased risk of STIs, and complications during pregnancy like preterm birth. Treating BV early relieves uncomfortable symptoms and helps protect your long-term reproductive health.

How Should I Support My Recovery From Bacterial Vaginosis?

Once treatment begins, there are several simple but important steps you can take to support your healing. It’s essential to complete the full course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms improve before the medication is finished. Avoid douching or using any scented products in the vaginal area, as these can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and delay recovery.

It’s also best to refrain from sexual activity until your treatment is complete to prevent irritation or reinfection. Wearing breathable, cotton underwear and avoiding tight-fitting clothing can help keep the area dry and reduce the risk of further irritation. If your symptoms persist or return, follow up with your InMotion Health provider; we’re here to provide continued care
